All eligible St. David’s HealthCare facilities were recently honored with an “A” for patient safety, ranking them among the safest hospitals in the U.S. according to The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog. The new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades assign grades of “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” and “F” to hospitals nationwide and provide the most complete picture of patient safety in the U.S. St. David’s HealthCare is the only hospital system in Central Texas to receive the top rating at all eligible facilities.
St. David’s Medical Center, St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, as well as St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center and St. David’s Georgetown Hospital received an “A” rating. Heart Hospital of Austin and St. David’s Surgical Hospital were not included in the study completed by The Leapfrog Group because the facilities are considered specialty hospitals. These St. David’s HealthCare facilities were among 823 hospitals nationwide to receive an “A” ranking. St. David’s Medical Center and St. David’s Georgetown Hospital have each received straight “A” ratings since The Leapfrog Group launched the Hospital Safety ScoreSM initiative in 2012.
“We know that safety and high-quality care are key to achieving optimal patient outcomes,” Thomas Knight, M.D., chief medical officer of St. David’s HealthCare, said. “This recognition is a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our doctors, nurses and staff members to provide safe and effective medical care to every patient every day.”
“Hospitals that earn top marks nationally in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade have achieved the highest safety standards in the country,” Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said. “That takes commitment from every member of the hospital staff, who all deserve thanks and congratulations when their hospitals achieve an ‘A’ Safety Grade.”
